白玛琳博士在蒙台梭利教育领域有着漫长而杰出的职业生涯。
1979年,担任纽约市西区蒙台梭利学校校长,直到2007年退休。
1970年至2008年,担任西区蒙台梭利学校教师教育项目的联合主任和讲师。
1982年至2009年,担任纽约大学教育副教授。
2008年,成为北京Etonkids蒙台梭利教师培训项目的联合主任和讲师。
2006年至2022年,担任MACTE专员,并在国际委员会、规章制度和标准委员会以及研究委员会任职。她是中国、美国、墨西哥和加拿大MACTE核查小组的组长。
大家好,我是白玛琳博士的学生、北京童心童语创始人邸文。今天我想跟大家分享我眼中和心中的白玛琳。
Hi, I am Wendy Di, founder of Beijing Heart and Mind Education.
我与Marlene结缘于2010年夏天,那时我为了成为一名专业的蒙氏幼儿园园长报名参加了EMTTA的AMS培训,她见到我非常高兴,跟我说你是第一个来参加AMS培训的园长,我们希望你能够成为星星之火,把蒙氏理念传递给更多的老师和家长。
Marlene and I got to know each other well in the summer of 2010. I had enrolled for EMTTA AMS training to gain the knowledge to be a professional principal of Montessori kindergartens. She was delighted to see me there and told me that I was the first principal to participate in her AMS training. She expressed the hope that I would go on to become a spark and pass Montessori's concept to more teachers and parents. Something I still strive to do to this day.
Marlene是一位严师,在培训中我们无时无刻不感受到她治学的严谨,对每一个细节的严格要求;她上起课来旁征博引,从理论研究依据到教室实践,案例信手拈来,Cory Behr 半年不进教室、一进教室就开挂的例子至今让人难忘。
Marlene was a strict teacher. During the training, we felt her rigorous style and strict requirements for every detail all the time. She cited a lot of evidence during all her classes, from theoretical research to examples of classroom practice. Corry Behr's example of refusing entering the classroom for half a year and knowing everything as soon as he enters the classroom is unforgettable.
Marlene的教学没有那么多套路和云山雾罩,但她让我很快明白一个道理,到底如何判断什么是真正的蒙氏教育?作为老师,到底如何判断在教室里应该或者不该做什么?这一切的答案就是跟随孩子、跟随自己的内心,跟随真善美。
Marlene's teaching was clear and direct; she quickly taught me how to judge what real Montessori education is. As a teacher, how do we consider what should or should not happen in the classroom? What it means to follow the child, follow our hearts, and follow the truth, goodness, and beauty.
2011年亚洲蒙台梭利年会前夕,为了帮助提升幼儿园的管理和教学品质,Marlene来到我所在的伊顿棕榈泉校园蹲点一个月,手把手教我如何管理一所蒙氏幼儿园,她让我明白一所蒙氏幼儿园应该从上到下都贯彻蒙氏理念,不论是园长、老师,还是厨师、保洁,通通都要按照同一理念去工作。
Before the 2011 Asian Montessori Annual Conference, Marlene came to my Entonkids Palm Springs campus for one month to help improve the management and teaching quality of the kindergarten. She taught me how to manage a Montessori kindergarten. She made me understand that a Montessori kindergarten should implement the Montessori philosophy from top to bottom. They should all work according to the same Montessori philosophy, whether the teacher or the chef.
给我印象最深的一件事是有一次我们一起巡班,Marlene发现教室里有一些桌椅板凳和衣饰框的螺丝松了,她说你要经常检查,如果发现松了就要及时拧紧,她说她当园长的时候兜里经常揣着螺丝刀,发现哪里松了就及时拧拧。一个拥有PhD学位,一个纽约大学教授,一个从业30多年的资深园长和培训师,兜里经常揣着螺丝刀,及时修复环境,这给我的印象太深刻了。由此可见,她真的是知行合一的典范。
One of the things that impressed me most was that once we observed a class together. Marlene found that the screws of some desks, chairs and dressing frames in the classroom were loose. She said that I should always check them and tighten them in time. Marlene shared with me that when she was a principal, she often carried a screwdriver in her pocket so she could fasten them if they were loose. As someone with a Ph.D., a professor at New York University, and a senior principal and trainer with more than 30 years of experience, she always carried a screwdriver in her pocket to repair the environment herself. She was a model of the unity of knowledge and practice.
她善于反思。有一次我们的作业都没有做好,她说这不是你们的问题,这是我们的问题。她让我懂得什么是向内看,遇到问题先从自己身上找原因。她对专业的追求永无止境。
She was good at teaching reflection. She taught me how to look inside myself and understand why I encountered problems. Once, when we didn't do our homework well, she said it was not our fault but that of the faculty.
她是一个永远跳出框外思考的人,70高龄依旧精力充沛、孜孜不倦地工作,她曾经告诉我她每个月都会逼着自己看一篇跨行业、跨领域的专业文章,比如物理学、互联网科技,不断锻炼自己的思维能力,并从其它领域获得对教育的启发。
At more than 70 years old, Marlene was still energetic and tireless. She was a person who always thought outside the box. She once told me that she forced herself to read various articles every month, including physics and Internet technology. This allowed her to constantly exercise her thinking ability and get inspiration from other fields.
当所有人都认为蒙氏教育与我国的《幼儿园教育指导纲要》相互矛盾的时候,她找人把《纲要》翻译成英文,对比后她对《纲要》给予极高的评价,还特意在培训中跟一届又一届的学员说,蒙氏教育的目标与《纲要》一致,相互之间可以完美融合。我认为这是中国蒙氏教育发展的一个里程碑,它打破了人们关于蒙氏教育和本土化教育无休止的争论,告诉我们这两者可以非常完美的融合,从此打开了中国蒙氏教育的新格局。
When everyone thought that Montessori education and China's "kindergarten education guideline" was contradictory, she asked someone to translate the "Guideline" into English. After comparison, she highly praised the "Guideline." She also specially told the students one cohort after another in the training that the objectives of Montessori education were consistent with the "Guideline" and could be integrated flawlessly.
Marlene在中国生活和工作了十几年的时间,为中国蒙氏教育做出了巨大贡献,她让AMS培训在中国发扬光大,为中国培养了大量高质量、国际化的蒙氏教师。是她打开了中国蒙氏教师的国际化视野,让我们可以跟上国际蒙氏教育的发展。
Marlene lived and worked in China for more than ten years and has made significant contributions to Montessori education in China. She promoted AMS training in China and trained many high-quality Montessori teachers in China. She opened the international vision of Montessori teachers in China so that we can keep up with the development of International Montessori education.
虽然Marlene永远离开了我们,但她的精神长存,她像一座灯塔,不断照亮我们前行的道路。她喜欢说Think outside of the box, 跳出框外思考,不断提醒我们刷新教育观念,跟随儿童的脚步。而我们对她最好的缅怀是把自己也变成一座座灯塔,照亮更多的儿童,为人类精神服务。
Although Marlene has left us forever, her spirit lives on. She is like a lighthouse, constantly illuminating our way forward. She likes to think outside the box, continually reminding us to refresh our educational philosophy and follow in children's footsteps. Our best way to remember her is by turning ourselves into lighthouses to illuminate more children and serve the human spirit.
